Pilot Knob State Park

Located to the Southeast of Forest City, Pilot Knob State Park is a 700 Acre public park. Pilot Knob was dedicated in 1923, making it one of the earliest in the Iowa State Park system. Several structures and a trail area are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1934, Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) 1757 renovated the park and built a number of structures still in the park today, including the Observation Tower sitting on top of a hill 250 feet above the surrounding area. The CCC also built a 1,000 seat open-air amphitheater.

The park features trails for hiking, equestrian, snowmobile, and cross country skiing.

Pilot Knob is home to a 4-acre sphagnum bog known as Deadman’s Lake, the only one of its kind in the state of Iowa. Due to the high acidity content, the ecosystem is

Pilot Knob Lake, spanning 15 acres, is a popular spot for fishing in the summer and winter.

There’s a campground, containing electric hookups, modern showers and restrooms, and a trailer dump station. 1/4th of the campground is first come first serve. Reservations can be made for two open shelters, a winter warming house and the amphitheater.

 

Bear Creek Golf Course

Bear Creek Golf Course is an 18-hole course open to the public. The par 71 golf course features four sets of tees for golfers of all types. The Front and Back 9, better known as the Cub and Grizzly, offers up much variety for those looking for a pleasant challenge. After a day on the green, enjoy a few rounds at the 19th hole. Our clubhouse offers casual dining, a full bar and a pro shop. Bear Creek hosts regular weekly events and tournaments.

 

Disc Golf

Split by the Winnebago River, the Forest City Disc Golf Course is a 21-pole course that spans across Pammel Park and East Woods Parks. Each hole features three tees to accommodate disc golfers of all levels. Experience a mix of open holes, water hazards and wooded terrain.

 

YMCA

The Forest City YMCA provides a wide variety of facilities and programs to the community to promote healthy, active living. Facilities feature a pool, gym and fitness center, an aerobics/dance studio, handball/racquetball court, outdoor field, climbing walls, sauna, jacuzzi, a teen youth center, general purpose room and a drop-in babysitting room.

 

Trails

Hynes Spur Trail
Approximately 2-mile long, off-road paved trail running from J Street at Pammel Park to 330th St./Airport Road.
Hanson Trail
An Approximately 9-mile long loop with a mix of paved off-road trails and share-the-road trails. Trail starts and ends on J Street at Pammel Park.
Pilot Knob Loop
An Approximately 4-mile trail beginning at the entrance of Pilot Knob State Park.
Korth Nature Trail
an extension of the Hynes Spur Trail, this trail runs North half a mile along the Winnebago river and turns south ending at the grocery store parking lot.
